Basic Sizes

Finding the right size depends on your design objective. Rugs can function as focal points or an accent. They are useful when you are trying to create separation between spaces, or extend a room. Figuring out how you want the rug to function in the space is a good step in understanding what size you need to shop for.

Living Room

When shopping for a living room, its important to take all furniture into consideration before deciding on a placement. The layout plan of the room, open or defined, influences the size of the rug.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure the front legs of the furniture are on the rug. There should be around 6 inches of rug on each side of the furniture.

Tip

You want your rug to fill the space – but you want to make space for your floors to show too. Keep 12-18 inches between the rug and the wall.

We find in general this does the trick to make sure that your rug has enough space, but doesn’t cover your floors

Dining Room

In a dining room, an area rug usually lies in the center of the space, underneath the table. Choose a rug that is large enough to allow the chairs to sit completely on top of the rug - even after they've been pulled out from the table.

Tip

Adding a rug to your dining room is a great way to elevate your space while protecting your floors from the table and chairs.

Buy a rug big enough to fit all the chairs around the table. The rug should extend at least 8″ on each side of the table. Leave around 1 foot of floor around the perimeter of the room.

Bedroom

There’s no one way to outfit a bedroom with an area rug. The bedroom is defined by the centerpiece, the bed – the size and placement of your bed with determine what kind of rug you need in that space.

Tip

Allow for at least 8” of space on each side of the bed.

Don’t extend the rug to the nightstands, instead, allow the rug to sit at least a foot away from the end of your bed.
